Stephen Hawking’s Fantastic Vision of Black Holes May Solve 40-Year Paradox is a science article posted on CNN that talks about the proposed theory of famous physicists Stephen Hawking. Black holes are mainly created when a massive star reaches the end of its life, collapsing on their own gravity resulting in the creation of an area in spacetime that can be compared to a bottom-less pit absorbing anything that approaches too closely. Black holes are points of very intense gravitational pull in the fabric of space that are so extremely dense, objects falling into the black hole appear to be doomed, “swallowed” by the black hole, which is so massive, not even light which is the fastest thing in the universe is able to escape it.

Albert Einstein had created a theory which explains many of the functions of gravity, known as the theory of relativity (E=mc^2); when it comes to black holes, the theory which says that information about particles that passes through a black hole is destroyed. On an opposite end of the theory of relativity, quantum theory, which explains the functions in small atomic levels, describes that it is impossible for information created by the universe to disappear. This is ultimately where the paradox rests at. Black holes have puzzled many scientists for decades, they are places where laws described by mathematics break down and the science that describes nature no longer makes any sense, for many scientist, this is extremely frustrating. Knowledge from black holes describes that anything that goes into a black hole is potentially lost forever, during the 1970s, scientist tried to combine the general theory of relativity and quantum physics to explain a black hole, only resulting in mathematical nonsense which became known as the information loss paradox. Stephen Hawking has stated a solution claiming that black holes do not destroy information for eternity as has been thought, he says that information is not really passing into the black hole, it is stored into the “event horizon,” the ultimate boundary between the outside and inside of a black hole, in a process called “super translation.” In Hawking’s description, the information stored in the “super translation” are holograms of incoming particles, containing all the information that would be lost. For too many common folk, this concept can be pretty hard to understand, black holes defy human nature and what astonishes many is that their existence has created a boundary to the knowledge we are able to obtain. In “super translation” information pouring into the black hole ends up chaotically and useless and as Hawking explains, the results are useless, so in a way the information is lost, almost as if it were destroyed.

This article, Stephen Hawking’s Fantastic Vision of Black Holes May Solve 40-Year Paradox, has been picked because because it is an area of science that is extremely important to the understanding of the functions of nature. Science and mathematics have been brought together for many years in order to explain and make sense of many phenomenons. Not many people know, though they should know that a black hole is where everything that humanity knows of from science does not make sense anymore. Therefore, the article was picked because it rises a question to a lot of human thinkers and scientist who have started to question all of human knowledge we have known for years, is the information even valid? In addition, this article is important to the world of today because it is the first time in 40 years of science that scientist have tried to solve the black hole paradox and just now the fog is starting to clear up. This is important to the world of today since with Stephen Hawking in the lead, a new evolution of science has started with many new discoveries that are waiting to be solved, contributing to the progression of the world as one human race. New discoveries like these advance science which leads to the advancement in science technologies as a human species towards a better advanced future society.
